Edi Mūe Gathegi was born on March 10, 1979, in Nairobi, Kenya. He grew up in Albany, California. His father was John N’ Gathegi whereas information about his mother isn’t available. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara. He played basketball there until he had a knee injury which ended his career. That plunged him into depression and he started taking acting classes. That’s when he discovered his love for acting. He then studied in Tisch School of the Arts at New York University for a graduate school acting program, graduating in 2005.

His career began in theatre and his stage credits include Two Trains Running, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Othello, A Midsummer Night’s Dream among many others. His first professional role was in 2016, with his role as the Haitian Cabbie in the film ‘Crank’. He originally auditioned for the role of Kaylo but ended up playing the role of a Haitian Cabbie. He was coached by a Haitian friend for the role when he was skeptical at performing a Haitian accent. In 2007, he guest-starred on Lincoln Heights and Veronica Mars. After that he went on to star as Bodie in ‘Death Sentence’, Darudi in ‘The Fifth Patient’ and one of his popular roles Cheese in ‘Gone Baby Gone.

In 2013, he appeared in the Beauty And The Beast, and as Darren in a tv series ‘Family Tools’. He played a role in ‘Justified’ a tv-series and in ‘Wild Card’ another tv series in 2014. That year he also made a few short films and one tv movie ‘Grand Theft Auto: Give Me Liberty. He did another bunch of roles in 2015, like ‘Aloha’, a tv series ‘Proof’, another tv series ‘Namaste Bitches’, ‘Criminal Activities’, ‘Into the Badlands’ a tv-series and ‘The Blacklist’ a tv series.
